Sometimes, I like to add some 'zoom-zoom' effect to my photos. For example,
With SLR cameras, that can be done by shooting with a slow shutter speed and zooming the lens while the photo is taken. However, it's not a 100% hit and not convenient to shoot like that. Hence, we shall discover how to get it done in the computer, specifically, Photoshop.
Step 1: Open the image you want to add the effect
Step 2: Choose the area where you don't want the zoom effect.
In this case, I want the head/face of the pussy cat to be in focus, while the rest of the photo to have the effect.
So, using the 'Elliptical Marquee Tool' as shown, I selected the face of the pussy cat.
Step 3: Feather the selection
You don't want the effect to be too visible when transition from the non-zoom area to the zoom area. Hence you need to feather the selection so that the effect blends in nicely to the photo.
To do this, go to 'select'.. then 'modify'... then 'feather' as shown:
At the pop-up window, select a value between 10-20.
Step 4: Inverse the selection
Now you want to reverse the selection so that the rest of the photo that is not selected by you earlier will have the zoom effect. Go to 'Select'.. then choose 'Inverse'. Alternatively, you can press CMD+I for Mac OS X users
Step 5: Adding the effect
Now comes the fun part. Go to 'Filter' ... 'Blur'... then select 'Radial Blur'
A pop-up window will come out:
Select 'Zoom' for Blur Method and choose 'Best' for Quality. Then adjust the Amount accordingly but not too much. A value between 10-20 is considered okay.
When you click 'Okay', you will have something like this:
Step 6: Finishing up
Deselect the Marquee by pressing CMD+D or go to 'Select'.. then 'De-select'. Finish up by adjusting your exposure or adding speech bubbles for effect.
